Colorado's PPE Shortage

Colorado’s PPE shortage still an issue

Colorado’s PPE shortage – Personal protective equipment, or PPE, is meant to do just that: protect a person. Without this vital PPE in hospitals and other healthcare settings, it can become increasingly difficult to create a safe space for doctors and other medical personnel to fully treat patients.

Colorado’s PPE shortage seems to still be going strong, with many health settings still in need of more PPE. While many other cities and states have found ways to fix any PPE shortages they have, doctors and nurses in Colorado are still fighting for important and potentially life-saving PPE.

Safety for all

Masks, gloves, aprons, and face shields are worn by medical professionals to help stop the spread of COVID-19. This is imperative not only for the potentially susceptible patients that are in doctor’s offices and hospitals, but also for the medical personnel.

They all have families themselves that they are hoping to keep safe from the virus, and it is vitally important that there is not a surge of the virus within the medical personnel community. Colorado’s PPE shortage is affecting not only the public in general but also those working in the health setting who may come in contact with infected individuals.

Where has all of the important PPE gone, and what is being done to help remedy the situation? In Colorado, there were already shortages and a limited supply of necessary PPE at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It has clearly been hard for medical personnel there to catch up with these devastating nationwide shortages, and there seems to continue to be a lack of personal protective equipment.

Thankfully, as the weeks and months have passed from the beginning of the pandemic, there are certain protective equipment pieces that are being made more readily available. However, there are still important items that are necessary in medical settings which doctors and nurses are still awaiting.

This includes the N95 mask, which helps create an important seal around the wearer’s mouth and nose to help stop the spreading of the virus.

Colorado’s PPE shortage – A state issue

Colorado’s PPE shortage can be felt in many counties around the state. The state itself is attempting to help by purchasing as much PPE Equipment as possible, even with the inflated pricing that has been seen.

However, it is important for counties to step up and get first responders what they need from a reputable source. Unfortunately, there has been times when the equipment that has arrived has not been up to the high standards necessary to help stop the spread of the virus. This creates even more of a backlog of PPE needs.

Meeting the current demands of PPE in healthcare settings and care homes is proving to be a challenge. With the potential for a second wave of infections, now is an incredibly important time to ensure all counties in Colorado have access to high-quality personal protective equipment for all medical personnel and any first responders who need it. Timing will be very important going forward.

Hopefully, the counties and state will be able to catch up with the current PPE shortages.
