Mask wearing debate is dividing America

The mask wearing debate – As the world adjusts to a new way of life in light of the coronavirus crisis, the mask wearing debate is heating up. There are two opposing sides who both feel their position is justified.

While every individual is free to have their own opinion on the matter, some places have specific guidelines or laws regarding when and where an individual must wear a mask for the safety of themselves and others around them. Let’s take a look at the different sides of the mask wearing debate to understand where everyone is coming from.

To wear or not to wear a mask

Although there may be some exceptions, the rules and laws that are coming out in various states and municipalities require individuals to wear a protective mask when in a public space, a hospital, a store or another commercial building. There is a lot of information both supporting and against wearing masks in public.

Being in close proximity to somebody with any virus, including COVID-19, puts you at risk. With this specific virus travelling via small droplets through the air, many places are mandating personal protective equipment such as masks to help stop the spread.

The mask wearing debate argues that it will not only protect the wearer from getting the virus, but it will also stop the wearer from spreading the virus should they have it.

As we have seen with COVID-19, a person can have the virus without realizing it and can therefore easily infect others. Many business owners feel it is vitally important to keep their customers and employees safe.

However, there is also some talk about protective masks being detrimental to health and even taking away people’s freedom. Those who feel this way believe that a mask prohibits you from breathing properly, with too much carbon dioxide being inhaled and not enough fresh oxygen.

The face masks available today can vary in quality, but it is important to note that many surgeons and other medical personnel wear masks on a daily basis – even before the current pandemic – without any detrimental effect to their health.

Medical exceptions

Following social distancing rules has been shown to help lower the transmission of COVID-19. For some people, having a specific underlying condition makes them more susceptible to catching a severe form of the virus.

Similarly, some medical conditions make it more difficult to wear a mask. For these people, there have been exceptions made in many places to allow them into public spaces and stores sans mask with the assumption that the community surrounding them will follow social distancing and mask guidelines.

Keeping virus transmission low is important for the public as well as for the health system. Lower transmission of the virus reduces the need for hospital admissions. Overwhelming the health system or hospitals in an area can have negative consequences for a community.

If wearing a mask has any potential to help either yourself or others, perhaps understanding the reasons behind the different sides of the mask wearing debate can help you make the most informed decision.
