PPE for Aerosol Generating Procedures (AGP)

PPE for Aerosol Generating Procedures (AGP) is designed to protect you and to prevent infection. The following summarises key usage guidelines:

Before you put on your PPE

– Wash your hands
– Tie back your hair and remove any jewellery
– Check your PPE is the right size
– Put on gown, respirator mask, eye protection and gloves
– Put your PPE on outside the patient’s room


While wearing your PPE

– Don’t touch your face or PPE
– Wash or sanitise your hands regularly especially when changing gloves
– Limit the number of surfaces you touch
– Change gloves when torn or contaminated


When removing your PPE

– Remove gloves, gown then eye protection in an isolation room or the patient’s room
– Always remove the FFP3 respirator in a safe area outside the patient’s room
– Work with a supervisor 2m away to make sure you don’t infect yourself
– Dispose of all used PPE as healthcare waste


Putting on your PPE for Aerosol Generating Procedures (AGP)

1. Put on your disposable fluid repellent gown or coverall
– Fasten neck and waist ties on your gown securely
– If using coveralls, step in and pull up to your waist
– Insert arms and use thumb hoops to ensure no skin shows between sleeve and gloves
– Pull up over the shoulders then fasten the zip to the top

 2. Put on your respirator

This must be the respirator you’ve been fitted with. If you use any eye protection, you should have it fitted with the respirator.

– Position the straps on the crown of the head and the above the ears and the nape.
– Now place the respirator flat across your cheeks and mould the nose piece with your fingers to achieve a good secure fit.
– If you can’t ensure a proper fit then perform a fit test according to the manufacturer’s instructions.


3. Place your eye protection over your eyes, adjusting to fit if necessary.


4. Select your gloves according to size and make sure the cuff of your gloves covers the cuff of your gown or overall.


Removing your PPE for Aerosol Generating Procedures (AGP)

Caution: The outside of your PPE will be contaminated so it’s important you follow the correct removal order and disposal method.


1. Remove your gloves

– Peel off one glove and hold in your gloved hand
– Insert your ungloved fingers into the wrist of the other glove and peel it off
– Make sure the second glove peels off over the first
– Discard both gloves
– Clean your hands with alcohol gel


2. Remove your gown

– Unfasten ties at the neck then the waist
– Peel carefully away from the neck and shoulder, being careful not to touch the outside of the gown
– Turn inside out and roll into a bundle
– Discard in an appropriate waste bag


3. Pull the restraining straps from behind to remove your eye protection and discard


 4. Respirator

– Remove the FFP3 in a safe place and clean hands with alcohol gel
– Lean forward, bring restraining straps together and lift to the top of your head
– Let the respirator fall off your face and place in the appropriate bin
– Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water
