Coronavirus Face Masks
If you are looking for face masks for coronavirus / COVID-19 protection the FFP2 face masks are the recommended standard or grade to protect against infection.
The face masks are either valved or unvalved respiratory protection masks. The FFP2 masks provide a minimum of 94% filtration & 8% maximum leakage to the inside. Their prime use is to protect the respiratory system in agriculture, construction and healthcare.
The masks were previously used by healthcare workers and as nhs ppe to protect against influenza viruses but are currently used for the prevention and control of the global pandemic coronavirus also known as COVID-19 or the Wuhan virus.
Medicshield FFP2 face masks meet the WHO (World Health Organisation) guidelines for coronavirus face masks.
What do respirator masks for COVID-19 look like?
Respirator masks for COVID-19 are a half mask that covers the mouth and nose in order to protect the respiratory system.
The mask has a small metal section that sits above the nose and 2 elastic headbands in order to keep the FFP2 mask securely in place.
The top elastic headband fits securely just above the crest or widest part of your head and the lower elastic band sits at the nape of your neck.
How to use FFP2 face masks for Coronavirus
Medicshield FFP2 are suitable for anyone and designed to be easy to use. To fit or doth the FFP2 hold the face mask and place over the mouth and nose before placing both of the elasticated headbands over your head.
The higher elasticated headband sits slightly above the crest or widest part of your head with the lower headband positioned at the nape of the neck.
Once you have the face mask in position, adjust the mask fitting over your nose by gripping or pinching the metal bridge to fit closely but comfortably. The lightweight nature of the design ensures the mask is comfortable to wear.
Other COVID-19 Face Masks
Medicshield also supplies the FFP3 Face mask designed for a higher grade of protection.
That is part of the NHS PPE required for dealing with patients who have or are suspected to have COVID-19 that are undergoing an Aerosol generating Procedure (AGP) and when working with COVID-19 patients in high risk unit such as intensive care unit, intensive treatment unit or high dependency unit (ICU/ ITU/HDU).
Are the masks reusable?
Although the masks are not marked as reusable this is due to them originally being manufactured for the construction & agricultural sectors.
The current guidelines for the use of FFP2 masks for coronavirus is that you do not need to change your face mask in between patients even if they are demonstrating symptoms of COVID-19.
Face Mask Replacement
You must replace your face mask and discard according to guidelines under the following circumstances:
- If your face mask is damaged
- If it gets soiled (e.g. with secretions, body fluids)
- If it gets damp
- If uncomfortable
- If difficult to breathe through
FFP2 vs N95 vs KN95
Face masks or respirator masks are all graded in accordance to their level of protection and the grading system differs in each country for the same grading of masks.
FFP2, N95 and KN95 are all equivalently graded masks offering the same protection with the name differing purely due to the country of origin.
FFP2 is the UK/EU version of the KN95 used in China and the N95 is the US equivalent.
